General Questions

What is an Electric Bike?
Electric bikes are bicycles that have been fitted with an electric motor and a battery. Electric bikes or ebikes have been around for many years but are only just gaining traction in the US now. The motor is controlled by one of two user selected methods. First is via a Pedal Assist Sensor (PAS) that provides power to the bike. The rider selects how much pedal assistance is provided on a scale of 0-5, with 0 being no assist and 5 being the maximum. The second method to control the motor on our FattE’s is with a throttle. This throttle assist allows the rider to effortlessly cruise, even without pedaling. But rest assured ebikes are just like riding a regular bicycle and the motor can only be engaged when the rider chooses.
What is a Fat Tire Bike (Or what is a Fat Tire Electric Bike?)
Fat Tire bikes are fitted with 4.0 inch wide tires. These”fatter” tires provide additional traction and stability which makes our bikes safer. Fat Tires are considered ‘go anywhere, anytime tires’. They can handle terrain most bikes would not be able to navigate. Rain, snow gravel, sand and potholes are no match for fat tires. The increase in stability is instantly recognizable when you ride a FattE-Bike. Our fat tires also make the rider more visible to other cyclists and motorists. This additional visibility also contributes to the safety of a FattE-Bike.
Where is FattE-Bikes located?
FattE-Bikes was born in Denver, Colorado and is proud to be Denver’s first electric bike manufacturer. We don’t currently have a storefront but can be contacted through our website.
Your bikes sound amazing but I don't ride because: I have bad knees, I hate hills, I don't want to go fast, I've never ridden an electric bike before.
Anyone can ride a FattE-bike since IT’S JUST LIKE RIDING a conventional bike. Joint pain is no longer an issue as our PAS (pedal assist sensor) & throttle system will do as little or as much of the work as you choose, letting you enjoy every moment of your ride. You have complete control of your speed. Best of all…. FattE-Bikes make hills disappear.
Do I need a license or permit?
No! Our FattE-Bikes are classified just like a regular bicycle and therefore do not require a special license, insurance or anything else that a scooter or car requires. This also gives electric bikes access to most bike paths and other places that vehicles can’t go. That said, FattE-Bikes recognizes that laws can vary in different municipalities therefore we recommend checking local regulations before riding. Feel free to reach out to us for additional information.
How fast can a FattE-bike go?
In order to be classified as a bicycle and not require a license, motors for all ebikes have a top speed of 20 MPH. However, it is possible for the rider to go faster by only using their own pedal power.
How far can I go on a single charge?
Average riders can go between 20-40 miles on a single charge.  There are a number of factors that influence the range, such as the weight of the rider, the amount of power they choose to use while riding, the terrain they ride such as hills vs flat terrain.  Most people do not commute this far and can easily manage their daily riding on a single charge.  However, for greater distances we make sure to provide a charger that’s light enough to carry around.  We also sell additional chargers so you have the option being able to charge the bike at home and at work without having to carry an extra charger. Of course all FattE-Bikes come with a battery monitor so you’ll always know when you need to charge your battery.
How long does it take to charge?
Our batteries take anywhere from 4-6 hours to fully charge using a standard 110 volt outlet.
How long will the battery last?

Our batteries will last for 2+ years with 500 full charge / discharge cycles or about 10,000 miles.

Does it have Regenerative braking?

The short answer is no.  For a variety of reasons regenerative braking or ‘regen’ is not very practical or efficient.  It uses something called a Direct Drive Motor which has a variety of issues that comes with these types of motors including added weight and resistance.  On top of that if you rode the bike on a single charge, you are only realistically going to get back about 5% of the of the overall charge of the battery. So let’s say that you normally get 30 miles per charge on a ride, 5% of that is 1.5 miles – not really much of a gain!  Our motors instead carry the more efficient geared hub motor.  For much more information on this topic you can go here and here and if you really want to geek out on the math – here.

Does the battery charge while I'm pedaling?

No, but we would love to offer it as soon as it’s possible! This technology is still in its infancy and is far from affordable for most people. Your FattE-Bike can be charged using regular power so even though it doesn’t self charge it’s still one of the most eco-friendly ways to get around. In fact ebikes can average the equivalence of 1,000 miles to the gallon.

Is there a height and weight limit?
At this time our bikes are best suited for anyone 5’5 – 6’2. However we are developing models that are ideal for anyone below 5’5 as well. Those models are available to order anytime! Our bikes have a suggested weight limit of 265 lbs but heavier riders still fully enjoy using our bikes. Anyone over this weight limit takes full responsibility and if there are any mechanical or bike issues that develop as a result, FattE-bikes is not to be held liable
Do I have to use the motor?
No, you choose when to engage the motor. It doesn’t matter whether you’re using the PAS (Pedal Assist Sensor) or throttle system, the motor only kicks in when you decide. If you choose not to use the motor your FattE-Bike will operate just like conventional bicycle. However, electric bikes can weigh as much as 60 lbs, so even though you don’t need to use the motor it will take a little more effort to get around.
Do I have to pedal?
No, if you choose to pedal then great! This is still a bike of course. But due to the unique inclusion of a hand throttle if you don’t want to pedal you absolutely do not have to!
Where can I ride?
Anywhere a regular bike can go an electric bike can go! There are some exceptions such as dirt trails in national forests and in some local jurisdictions. Typically ebikes can still ride on restricted terrain however riders are discouraged from engaging the motor in order to minimize trail damage stemming from the tires spinning out. Studies have shown that electric bikes have about the same impact on surfaces as conventional bikes. However for city riding, street riding, bike path riding…….ebikes are the absolute best way to get around! That said, FattE-Bikes recognizes that laws can vary in different municipalities therefore we recommend checking local regulations before riding.
